Glasgow LEZ knocked out your old car?

What the Low Emission Zone actually means for your old diesel or petrol, what it's worth as scrap, and the decision tree on whether to scrap, sell outside Glasgow, or keep driving outside the zone.

The Glasgow LEZ in 90 seconds

The Glasgow Low Emission Zone came into full enforcement on 1 June 2024. Inside the zone (roughly the M8 boundary down to the Clyde, covering most of the city centre), all vehicles must meet at least Euro 6 for diesel and Euro 4 for petrol. Non-compliant vehicles caught inside the zone are hit with a PCN, starting at £60 (£30 if paid early) and doubling for each subsequent contravention up to £480 for cars.

In practice: most pre-2015 diesels and most pre-2006 petrols don't comply. If that's your daily driver and you live inside the LEZ, you've got a decision to make.

// Decision tree

Three honest paths

Path A: Scrap
You live inside the LEZ, car is your daily driver, upgrade is overdue. Scrap value goes towards a Euro 6 replacement.
Path B: Sell outside Glasgow
Car is reliable, you live outside Glasgow, only occasionally needed the city centre. Private sale to an outside-Glasgow buyer keeps the value high.
Path C: Keep + reroute
You live just outside the zone, can avoid the city centre, the car still has life left. No LEZ exposure means no decision to make.

// Quick compliance check

Does your car meet the LEZ standard?

Diesel · pre-Sept 2015
Usually NON-compliant (pre-Euro 6). Check the V5C "EC type-approval".
Diesel · Sept 2015 onwards
Usually compliant (Euro 6). Some early Euro 6 vans need real-world checking.
Petrol · pre-2006
Usually NON-compliant (pre-Euro 4).
Petrol · 2006 onwards
Usually compliant (Euro 4+). 99% pass.

Use Glasgow City Council's online LEZ checker before you decide. Edge cases happen, especially with imported vehicles and converted vans.

What a non-compliant car is worth as scrap right now

Pre-Euro 6 diesels are oversupplied in the UK scrap market because the LEZ rollout pushed a lot of them out of city use simultaneously. That has pushed prices down slightly compared to 2022 levels. Even so, a typical non-compliant car still has £200–£500 of scrap value depending on size, weight and parts demand.

Parts demand matters more than you'd think. A 2012 Qashqai 1.5 dCi non-compliant for the LEZ is still in heavy demand for parts (gearboxes, DPF, turbo) at our breakers yard, so we pay closer to £350–£450 for that than the metal-only price of £180. What to do with the PCN if you've already got one

Pay it within 14 days for the 50% discount. Don't ignore it; the doubling rule means the fourth contravention in 90 days hits £480. The PCN is between you and the council, scrapping the car afterwards doesn't undo the charge. The reason to scrap (or sell, or reroute) is to stop the meter running.

Glasgow LEZ scrappage, common questions

Is the Glasgow LEZ a reason to scrap my car?

Not by itself. The LEZ doesn't force you to scrap a non-compliant car, it just means you can't drive it through the LEZ zone without a fine. If you live outside the LEZ and only need to enter occasionally, the maths often says "sell privately to a buyer outside Glasgow" rather than scrap. If you live inside the LEZ and the car is your daily driver, scrapping plus an upgrade is usually the cleaner option. We'll quote whichever path makes sense.

How much is my pre-Euro 6 diesel worth as scrap right now?

For a 2010-ish diesel that fails the LEZ Euro 6 standard, scrap value sits around £200–£500 depending on size, weight, and parts demand. A 2014 Qashqai 1.5 dCi might fetch the upper end because the engine and DPF still have aftermarket value. A 2008 1.6 HDi Focus that's rusty and high-mileage is closer to the lower end. We quote against the reg, not against a postcode guess.

Does the Scottish Government still run an LEZ scrappage grant?

The original Low Emission Zone Support Fund (LEZSF) closed to new applications in 2023. As of 2026 there's no active Scottish-wide scrappage grant, although Glasgow City Council occasionally reopens narrow targeted schemes. Always check gov.scot for the current status before assuming a grant exists. We're happy to pay scrap value either way, no grant required.

Will my Cat S or Cat N car be worth more if it's LEZ-compliant?

Yes, slightly. A Cat S or Cat N car that meets Euro 6 (so it could be repaired and resold inside the LEZ) carries a price premium over the same category car that doesn't. The salvage market values usable cars more than non-usable ones. Send us the category and reg and we'll quote accordingly.

Can you collect a non-runner from inside the LEZ zone?

Yes. Recovery trucks are exempt from LEZ rules, so we can collect from any G-postcode address inside the zone without restriction. The car doesn't need to be driveable. Wheels need to roll and steering needs to unlock, that's the only mechanical requirement.

I drove my non-compliant car in the LEZ by mistake, is the fine refundable if I scrap the car?

No, the LEZ Penalty Charge Notice is separate from any scrap transaction. Pay the PCN within the early-payment window to halve the cost. Scrapping the car after the fact doesn't undo the charge. The reason to scrap is forward-looking, to stop further fines accumulating, not to retroactively avoid them.
